Grand Egyptian Museum’s Official Opening Postponed to Late 2025 Amid Regional Tensions

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has officially announced the postponement of the Grand Egyptian Museum’s (GEM) official opening, which was originally scheduled for 3 July 2025. The decision comes amid escalating regional tensions, prompting the Egyptian government to prioritize safety and international readiness.

Security and Significance at the Forefront

In a public statement, Prime Minister Madbouly emphasized that the opening of such a monumental and globally anticipated event must take place under “ideal and secure conditions.” Given the museum’s historical and cultural importance, the delay reflects Egypt’s commitment to ensuring the safety of visitors and the dignity of the occasion.

Soft Opening Continues

Despite the delay, the Grand Egyptian Museum remains partially open to the public through its ongoing soft opening phase, where visitors can explore selected exhibitions and experience a preview of what the full museum will offer.

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities reassured both local and international audiences that Egypt remains dedicated to cultural engagement, while also being mindful of the broader geopolitical landscape.

A Global Cultural Beacon

Once officially launched, the GEM is expected to become the largest archaeological museum in the world and a cornerstone for tourism in Egypt, housing artifacts including the full Tutankhamun collection.
