OpenAI Unveils GPT-5: Smarter, Faster, and Available to All ChatGPT Users

OpenAI launches GPT-5, its most advanced AI model, for all ChatGPT users. Faster, smarter, and safer, GPT-5 offers Ph.D.-level reasoning, improved safety, “vibe coding” capabilities, and integration with Microsoft 365. API versions include gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano.

OpenAI Unveils GPT-5: Smarter, Faster, and Available to All ChatGPT Users

A Major Leap in AI Technology

OpenAI has officially launched GPT-5, its most advanced large-scale AI model to date. Rolling out on Thursday, the model is now available to all ChatGPT users, including free accounts—marking the first time free users can access a reasoning model.

Enhanced Capabilities Across Domains

Described by OpenAI as “smarter, faster, and a lot more useful”, GPT-5 boasts significant improvements in writing, coding, healthcare, and complex problem-solving. CEO Sam Altman praised the model’s advancements, calling the switch back to GPT-4 “quite miserable” after trying GPT-5.

Lower Hallucination Rates and Safer Responses

OpenAI says GPT-5 produces fewer fabricated answers, thanks to lower hallucination rates and 5,000 hours of safety testing. The model uses “safe completions” for potentially risky queries, offering high-level responses within safety boundaries. It also explains limitations more clearly and avoids unsupported claims.

Demonstrated Innovation: “Vibe Coding”

During its launch event, OpenAI showcased GPT-5’s ability to generate functional software from simple prompts—a process dubbed vibe coding. In one example, the AI built two unique French-learning web apps in seconds, complete with flashcards, quizzes, and progress tracking.

Availability Across User Plans

  • Free Users: Access GPT-5 with a usage cap, then switch to GPT-5 mini

  • Plus Users: Higher usage limits

  • Pro Users: Unlimited GPT-5 and GPT-5 Pro access

  • Edu & Enterprise: Access coming within a week

Integration with Microsoft and Beyond

Microsoft is integrating GPT-5 into Microsoft 365 Copilot, consumer Copilot, and Azure AI Foundry. Enterprise software firm Box has been testing GPT-5, calling it a “complete breakthrough” in handling complex logic and large datasets.

Developer Versions

Three API versions—gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano—are available for different cost and performance needs.

A More Human Interaction

OpenAI says GPT-5 offers a conversational experience that feels more natural and “human,” with reasoning capabilities akin to having a team of Ph.D.-level experts on hand.
