Free Devices and Test Strips for Young Patients

Egypt’s universal health insurance system has announced new measures to support children and teenagers under 18 diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, including the free distribution of blood sugar monitoring devices and test strips. The plan also covers device replacement in cases of technical malfunction, provided the issue was not caused by misuse. Replacements must be collected from the same pharmacy where the original device was issued.

Updated Guidelines for Chronic Care Supplies

The system has updated its rules for distributing adult incontinence products to patients with severe spinal injuries, stroke complications, brain tumours, and advanced neurological diseases. These supplies will now require evaluation by specialist consultants to determine eligibility. Coverage has also been expanded to include colostomy and urostomy bags.

Investment in Digital Transformation

In a parallel move, the system’s board approved capital participation in E-Health, Egypt’s government-backed digital health company. This investment aims to enhance the technological infrastructure supporting the national insurance system, helping to digitise services and streamline administrative operations.

Part of a Broader Healthcare Upgrade

These initiatives reflect Egypt’s commitment to improving chronic disease care, expanding patient coverage, and modernising healthcare delivery through technology-driven solutions.
