Modern Lighting for Ancient Wonders

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, in collaboration with the Spanish government, has completed a major project to upgrade the internal lighting systems of the three Giza pyramids—Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure. The upgrade introduces cutting-edge environmentally friendly LED lighting, designed to highlight the majestic and intricate internal architecture of these ancient wonders.

Enhancing Visitor Experience and Cultural Appeal

Minister Sherif Fathy emphasized that this initiative aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy to enhance the quality of services at Egypt’s archaeological sites and museums. By improving lighting, the project aims to elevate the visitor experience, especially for cultural tourists, and reinforce Egypt’s image as a top-tier destination rich in heritage.

Safe, Sustainable, and Scientifically Engineered

Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, assured that the newly installed system employs cool, non-invasive lighting units that are completely safe for the ancient materials. The project was carried out by a joint team of Egyptian and Spanish archaeologists and engineers after extensive scientific, technical, and environmental studies.

A Step Forward for Heritage Conservation

In addition to enhancing the visual experience, the new lighting system supports sustainability goals, helping preserve the integrity of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks. It underscores a commitment to international heritage protection standards and provides a unique opportunity for visitors to experience ancient Egyptian engineering brilliance.

Expanded Illumination Coverage

According to Ashraf Mohie El-Din, Director General of Giza Antiquities, the project included all internal corridors, burial chambers, elevators, and passageways across the three pyramids. The result is a more immersive and exciting visit while maintaining the site's authentic archaeological ambiance.
