Putin Voices Concerns Over Middle East Tensions and Global Stability

St. Petersburg, Russia — June 20, 2025

Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed growing international tensions during a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, speaking candidly on the escalating situation between Israel and Iran, the ongoing war in Ukraine, and the broader risk of global conflict.

On Israel-Iran Relations: “We’re Not Mediating, We’re Proposing Ideas”

Putin acknowledged the fragile and volatile dynamic between Israel and Iran, indicating that Russia maintains active dialogue with both sides. While clarifying that Moscow is not positioning itself as a mediator, he noted that Russia is offering ideas that could, if mutually acceptable, contribute to de-escalation.

“In such cases, it is better not to get ahead of ourselves… We are presenting our position to both sides,” Putin stated. “If they are attractive to both countries, we’ll be happy about it.”

Russia’s ongoing diplomatic engagement, he added, includes almost daily communication with Iranian officials, signaling a deep and continuous involvement in regional discussions.

On the Threat of a Global Conflict

Perhaps the most striking moment of his address came when Putin expressed concern about the broader geopolitical climate, warning of developments that could push the world closer to large-scale war.

“It’s worrying… What is happening in the Middle East, and of course, we are very concerned about what is happening around Iran’s nuclear facilities,” he said, signaling Russia’s unease with current escalations.

On Iran’s Nuclear Program and the Bushehr Plant

Putin reaffirmed Russia’s long-standing support for Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy, referencing the Bushehr nuclear reactor, a project built by Russia and still actively staffed despite the region’s instability.

“We defend Iran’s right to the peaceful atom… Despite the definite danger, we continue this work. We are not evacuating our personnel from there,” he stated firmly.

This statement underlines Russia’s commitment to its strategic cooperation with Iran while navigating the fine line between energy development and international nuclear concerns.

Putin’s remarks at the forum underscore a cautious yet assertive Russian position in global diplomacy—one that promotes engagement without direct mediation, warns of potential global risks, and stands firm on strategic partnerships, even in tense environments.
