Egypt Unveils Statue of Sir Magdi Yacoub: A Tribute to a National Icon of Humanity and Healing
Egypt unveils a statue of world-renowned surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub in Kit Kat Square, honoring his lifelong dedication to science and humanity. In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Cairo Opera House, Egypt’s Minister of Culture, Ahmed Fouad Henno, announced the creation of a public statue honoring Sir Magdi Yacoub, the world-renowned Egyptian cardiothoracic surgeon. The statue will be placed in Kit Kat Square, Giza, as a lasting tribute to a man celebrated not only for his medical excellence but also for his lifelong dedication to serving humanity.
Minister Henno described Sir Magdi Yacoub as a “true embodiment of the meaning of humanity,” highlighting that his contributions extend beyond science into the realms of compassion, hope, and national pride. “He realized that healing comes mostly from the heart,” Henno said, emphasizing the symbolic and emotional power of the statue.
The unveiling event was attended by Sir Magdi Yacoub himself, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Assistant Minister of Culture Hamdy Sattouhi, and other key national figures. Minister Henno stated that the statue sends a powerful message to future generations, reinforcing the importance of celebrating scientists and role models in public spaces.
The initiative is part of the Ministry of Culture’s broader vision to promote role models who contribute to nation-building and societal advancement. Henno extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Health and Population, Minister of Local Development Manal Awad, Giza Governor Adel el-Naggar, and other partners who helped bring this cultural project to life.
Speaking at the event, Sir Magdi Yacoub reflected on the deep interconnection between art, science, and health, noting that the development of nations relies not only on scientific innovation but also on community service and cultural expression. “I have a great love for both art and science,” he stated, reinforcing the idea that cultural recognition plays a vital role in national advancement.
